 6. James, Lawrence  The Rise & Fall of British Empire
Little Brown and Company 1997 Paperback
Paperback in good condition, some creasing to cover and spine. From Publishers WeeklyJames, a British historian whose previous books have dealt chiefly with military matters, writes engagingly about the British Empire from the time ofSir Walter Raleigh at the beginning of the 17th century to Nelson Mandela at the end of the 20th. The struggle that drove France out of Canada, he says, was ''Britain's first large-scale imperial war of conquest,'' and it set the pattern for future colonial wars from the American Revolution through the Napoleonic, Crimean, Boer, Afghan and Opium wars to WWI and the beginningof the end of the empire in India, Ireland, the Middle East and Africa. WWII finished the job. Except for the travels of Captain James Cook, tales ofexploration play almost no part in this account. It is, instead, a historyof how a fairly simple international mercantile enterprise?in which whitedominions were definitely regarded differently from black ones?changed itself and the face of the world. James peppers his account with illuminating and entertaining excerpts from period songs and popular literature. His conclusion: few empires have given their subjects so much of the intellectual wherewithal to overthrow their rulers. A sprawling and complex subject handled with admirable style and selectivity. Illustrations. From BooklistA treatment more than 700 pages in length might seem too long to be thought of as an overview. But considering the time span and plethora of events involved in the topic at hand--the entire history of the British Empire--this excellent work of popular history is indeed an overview, for it sur

 10. Lawrence, D.H.  Women in Love
Viking Pr April 1990 Paperback
From Library JournalThe published editions of Women in Love , probably Lawrence's greatest novel, have always been remarkably corrupt due to a lengthy, complex process ofrevision and transcription, a threatened libel suit, and numerous unauthorized bowdlerizations. The editors of this new Cambridge Edition have labored scrupulously to produce an authoritative text. What emerges, if not dramatically different, is fresher and more immediate. The introduction providesa valuable history of the novel's composition, revision, publication, andreception, and though the elaborate textual apparatus is strictly for advanced students of bibliography, the notes are splendid. Lawrence's 1919 Foreword and two early discarded chapters are also included. The recovery of a modern classic. Keith Cushman, Univ. of North Carolina, GreensboroCopyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to theHardcoveredition. From AudioFileThe relationship of four lovers and their beliefs are examined against thebrutal backdrop of a small mining town. Maureen O'Brien splendidly createsthe tone and tension of each character, dramatically accentuating the novel's theme of the destructive nature of relationships. The narration proves equally expressive, and O'Brien's voice has an entrancing lilt which complements each phrase. Her sensitive, fluid performance reflects the evolving mood of the work. The reading transports the listener to the world of the text with graceful dignity which unlocks the power of this enlightened work. s.l.d.  15. Norfolk, Lawrence  Lempriere's Dictionary
New York Harmony 1991 1st Edition Paperback
Paperback in good condition. 1st American edition. From Publishers WeeklyFew discerning readers will care to hack through this choked jungle of historical fiction, fantasy and myth, despite the obvious intelligence and erudition British first novelist Norfolk displays here. John Lempriere, an actual 18th-century classicist and mythographer, perceives the world through the lenses of Greek and Latin fables. When he sees his father mangled by hunting dogs, just after both have witnessed a naked girl--John's adored Juliette--bathing in a forest stream, this evocation of Actaeon and Diana goads Lempriere to ''lay the ghosts to Antiquity'' by compiling his famed Dictionary. In 19th-century London, ancient ghosts proliferate. Lampriere views PorkClub revelers as Circe's swine; a grotesquely murdered woman who was fed molten gold is perceived as Danae, seduced by Jove in a golden rain; a Juliette lookalike, slain in a goatskin, is a latter-day Iphigenia. Interlardedis a bloated subplot, delineating a scam enacted generations earlier by a party of East India traders, which in 1627 led to Richelieu's crushing siegeof the French city of La Rochelle when Huguenots sided with the English. During an eerie trance (paralleling the underworld visits of heroes Ulyssesand Aeneas) Lempriere learns of his ancestor's meddling in the traders' ''Cabbala.'' It is the phantoms of history who drove him to authorship. Norfolk's superimposition of mythic patterns on urban life implies a model in JamesJoyce's Ulysses. While his scheme misfires, he is a writer of talent who may yet write a better novel. From Library JournalIf Norfolk's first novel
